on 30th Dec 1917 as a result of a premature firing of a Stokes Mortar.
Two other soldiers of his regiment died in the same incident. They are
Lt. Grahame and Cpl. Stone MM. He is buried alongside these two
soldiers.
In the
photograph he is pictured in the uniform of the Sherwood Foresters
holding the rank of Lance Corporal. He was commissioned in 1915 and
served with the Black Watch until his death.

Leslie Alexander BEATON was born at Monkshill,
Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, on 20 October 1890, and grew up in Musselburgh
where he later attested for the 2nd Battalion/Highland Light Infantry.
Leslie arrived with his regiment at Boulogne on 14 August 1914 (WO
372/2) and remained with the 2/HLI (First Army, Second Division, 5th
Infantry Brigade), until his death. On leave in June 1915 following
2nd Ypres, Leslie married Mary Keppie MCNEILL at Musselburgh. His rank
at the time of his marriage was Quartermaster Serjeant, and his
widow's pension papers (PIN 82/10) relate that Leslie was a company
Serjeant Major in "A" Company when he was killed at the age of 26 in
the Battle of Arleux. Losses for the 2/HLI on 28 April 1917 totalled
42 officers and men killed, 187 wounded and 43 missing.

Leonard entered France on the 30th March 1915, was a Private with the
Royal Berkshire Regiment, then became a 2nd Corporal with the Machine
Gun Corps, before being commissioned into the Royal Berks around the
20th December 1916. At 12:45pm, on 9th April, he lead one of two
companies of Royal Berkshires over the crest of Observation Ridge. At
this point, Leonard, and his fellow officer, 2nd Lt KCB Storey (aged
19), also of the Royal Berkshire Regiment, together with a score of men,
found themselves facing four enemy artillery batteries, which
immediately opened fire at point blank range. The two officers are
buried in Faubourg D'Amiens, while the men were buried in Houdain Lane
Cemetery.

had been wounded at Hooge in October 1915, He was killed in action on
March 22nd 1918 whilst trying to stem the German March offensive. He is
remembered on the Arras memorial, Bay 7

Formerly of the Pembrokeshire Police Force he was wounded on the 23rd March
1918 while leading an ammunition wagon up to the Guns. His wounds were dressed
on site and it was believed his injuries where not too serious. His C.O. put
forward his award for the M.M. for "his grand and brave work during the heavy
fighting round Queant". Unfortunately he died of wounds received and never knew
he was to receive the M.M.
