Location Information

Barly is a village and commune in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, some 25 kilometres west-south-west of Arras, north of the main road Arras/Doullens (N25).

The French Military Cemetery is on the road (D8) leading to Bavincourt, approximately 1 kilometre from the village.


Historical Information

The French Military Cemetery was begun by the French in September, 1915, and used by British Field Ambulances and other units from March, 1916, to May, 1918; and after the Armistice the graves of nine men of the Indian Labour Corps were brought in from isolated positions.

There are 351, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site, 323 French and 28 Commonwealth.

Commonwealth Identified Casualties: United Kingdom 19, India 9. Total 28.

Shot at Dawn

4567 Private Joseph Brennan. 1st/8th King's (Liverpool) Regiment, executed for desertion on 16th July 1916.  Plot II. A. 13. Son of Mrs. Josephine Clark, of 29, Whipple St., Pawtucket, Rhodes Island, U.S.A.

3563 Private J. Sloan. 1st /4th King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment executed for desertion on 16th July 1916. Plot II. A. 11. He had been serving in support trenches before being sent to a back area for instruction in bombing with 
hand-grenades.  There Sloan discarded his equipment & made off.  6 days later in Rouen he was arrested, stating that he had a travel pass for the UK.  (Putkowski, p. 93)​
