List of cemeteries and memorials containing burials of men executed under the Army Act during the Great War

90 years after their deaths, 306 of the 346 soldiers who were executed for military offences during World War I were granted posthumous pardons from the British Ministry of Defence. These soldiers were executed during hostilities for breaches of military discipline that included desertion, cowardice, quitting their posts, striking a Superior Officer, sleeping at their post, and casting away their arms.

The remaining group of 40 soldiers were not granted a pardon, because of the nature of their crimes which included murder and mutiny.

Blindfold & Alone: British Military Executions in the Great War  by Cathryn Corns & John Hughes-Wilson, 2001 is now the definitive general account.

The authors were able to investigate the actual records of the courts martial & of the post-conviction procedures of review & confirmation; & in over 500 pages, deal in detail with the origins of, & practice under the prevailing Military Law; the historical background of the disciplinary framework; the state of Mental Health knowledge in 1914; & the demands of active service.

The work overtakes in many aspects the earlier works mentioned above, presenting in general a nuanced corrective to them

A fully detailed account is provided of the offences of over 100 of those executed.

Details of the executed servicemen can be found by clicking on a cemetery link below

The following 16 soldiers have no known grave and are not commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission

Early on in the Allied intervention in North Russia in 1918-19, some thousands of Russians were recruited by the Allies, and formed into a ‘Slavo-British Legion’; and in a later effort to increase numbers,
c. 1000 men were taken from the gaols in Archangel, and put in the hands of a newly commissioned Canadian called Dyer to turn into fighting soldiers.  Hence ‘Dyer’s Battalion’, sometimes referred to as the ‘Slavo-British Penal Battalion’.

The Russian recruits had in general proved unreliable in combat, and prone to mutiny and desertion; and on 7 July 1919, a company of Dyer’s Battalion (he had died of ‘flu the previous December) — along with a company from another battalion in the Slavo-British Legion—  themselves mutinied, killing 5 British and 4 Russian officers while they were asleep in their tents.  Some of the dead were mutilated, and large numbers of the mutineers deserted to the enemy.

Order was forcibly restored by British troops, & some 40 of the ringleaders captured.  Courts martial were held on July 12 & 13.  Most of the defendants were acquitted, but 13 were convicted and their execution ordered for July 17.

On the chosen day, c. 1200 men were paraded, the firing squad being made up of Russian soldiers in charge of a Russian officer.
Precautions were taken: only a minimum of ammunition was issued, while British troops covered the scene with Lewis guns.
Two of the convicted men were reprieved at the last minute, and sent off to serve prison sentences in lieu.
Following the order to fire, only 4 of the mutineers were killed outright, 7 were left wounded, while the Sergeant was untouched.
The firing squad was doubled off the parade, and British officers used their revolvers to complete the execution that the firing squad had failed to carry out.

All the bodies were buried in one big grave, which the victims had themselves dug that morning.  The murdered officers were also buried locally (the name of the British ones are given by Jones), and the remainder of the battalion was converted into a labour unit.

The French Mutinies

Information provided by Nicholas Philpot

Following the disastrous failure of the Nivelle Offensive in May 1917, 49 infantry divisions  (about 43% of the total) were affected by mutiny: thus over 30,000 men were involved.  3427 were sent for court martial, having been chosen by their own officers & NCOs. Hard labour was ordered for 2878, death sentences imposed on 629, of whom 49 were executed.
