Location Information

Bavay is in the Department of the Nord. The Communal Cemetery is one of 40 in the Landrecies Group of Cemeteries and is 20 kilometres south west of Mons.


Historical Information

Bavay Communal Cemetery was within the area traversed by the British Expeditionary Force in August 1914, but was then occupied by the Germans until almost the end of the First World War.

Bavay Communal Cemetery contains 12 Commonwealth burials of the First World War.

34817 Private Arthur Richard Charles Butler, 10th Bn. Royal Warwickshire Regiment, died 8th November 1918. Born Poplar, London

41819 Private Clarence Lionel Disspain, 1st Bn. North Staffordshire Regiment, died 8th November 1918, aged 23. Son of Thomas Henry & Elizabeth Disspain of 39 Havil Street, Camberwell, London. 

12135 Sapper Edward Ezard, "B" Signal Company, Royal Engineers, died 24th August 1914, aged 31. Son of Mr. & Mrs. J. Ezard: husband of P. Ezard of 32 Newton Cottage, The Friary, Salisbury. Also served in the South African Campaign. 

242702 Private J. Fowler, 1st Bn. North Staffordshire Regiment, died 8th November 1918. 

31635 Private Thomas Garratt, 3rd Bn. Grenadier Guards, died 7th November 1918, aged 20. Son of Henry & Catherine Garratt of New Street, Baddesley, Ensor, Atherstone, Warwickshire. 

127 Private C. A. Hunt, 12th (Prince of Wales Royal) Lancers, died 29th August 1918. 

27006 Private Thomas Locker, 3rd Bn. Grenadier Guards, died 7th November 1918, aged 20. Son of William and the late Esther Locker of New Barn Farm, Belmont, Bolton, Lancs. 

22585 Private Percy Thomas Roberts, 1st Bn. Coldstream Guards, died 8th November 1918, aged 23. Son of George William Roberts of 29 Hartopp Road, Saltley, Birmingham. 

18733 Lance Corporal John Smith, 1st Bn. North Staffordshire Regiment, died  8th November 1918, aged 21. Son of Albert Henry & Mary Ann Smith of 47 Sparrow Street, Smalthorne, Stoke-on-Trent. 

3897Private W. W. Totman, 12th (Prince of Wales Royal) Lancers. 25th Aug. 1914. 

55197 Private  J. Turner, "A" Coy. 1st Bn. North Staffordshire Regiment, died 8th November 1918, aged 19. Son of Peter James & Eliza Turner. Native of Old Weston, Huntingdon. Grave in east part

241075 Private John Yates, 1st Bn. North Staffordshire Regiment, died 8th November 1918, aged 23. Son of John W. & Elizabeth Yates of 46 Richmond Street, Burton-on-Trent. Grave in east part
