Location Information

Bollezeele is a village and a commune 20 kilometres south-south-west of Dunkirk and 14 kilometres south-west of Berques, a town on the N16 road from Dunkirk to Hazebrouk. The Communal Cemetery is at the edge of the village on the road to Watten.


Historical Information


There are now 6, 1914-18 and 4, 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in this site.

96485 Driver J. T. Craggs, "D" BAttery, 49th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, died 23rd May 1915, aged 27.  Son of Joseph and Leah Craggs, of 66, Brunswick St., Darlington. Born at Winston, Co. Durham. 

21362 Serjeant G. G. James, 10th Bn. South Wales Borderers, died 4th January 1917, aged 41. Son of Joseph and Mary James, of Risca, Newport; husband of Mrs. P. L. James, of 7, Brynawel Terrace, Aberbeeg, Newport, Mon.​

15793 Corporal B. A. Smart, 11th Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers, died 9th March 1917.

22394 Private John Storey, 13th Bn. Durham Light Infantry, died 13th April 1917, aged 20. 13th Bn. Durham Light Infantry Son of John and Margaret Ann Storey, of 3, Frederick St., Pallion, Sunderland.

989 Gunner John Henry Wilcox, 2nd West Riding Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, died 31st January 1916.

44579 Rifleman William Noel Wilkinson, 16th (Pioneer) Bn. Royal Irish Rifles, died 6th July 1917, aged 19. Son of Walter and Harriet S. Wilkinson, of 34, Bryngwyn Rd., Newport, Mon. Born at Wanstead, Essex.

FX/76361 Leading Airman Leonard Percy Gardner, H. M. S. Kestrel, Royal Navy, died 29th May 1940, aged 26.

1620610 Sergeant John Kenneth Norgate, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in 550 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th August 1944, aged 20. Son of Frederick and Doris Norgate, of Heywood, Lancashire. INSCRIPTION. TREASURED MEMORIES, NOT JUST TODAY BUT EVERY DAY. GOD KEEP YOU IN HIS CARE.

1801735 Sergeant Horace Sydney Picton, Air Gunner in 550 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th August 1944, aged 22. Son of Sydney and Nellie Florence Picton, of Ponders End, Enfield, Middlesex. His brother Walter Charles also died on service and is buried in Enfield (Hertford Road) Cemetery.  INSCRIPTION. ETERNAL REST GIVE TO HIM, O LORD; AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON HIM.

1851762 Sergeant James Arthur Trayhorn, Air Gunner in 550 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th August 1944.
