Location Information
Chauny is a large town, 35 kilometres west of Laon. The French National Cemetery can be reached from the direction of Ham following the D937, Ham to Chauny road. It is necessary to cross a major road, the N32. Shortly after the junction the approach to Chauny is via a roundabout and a small industrial estate. After several hundred metres a left turn must be made at the first set of traffic lights. La Nécropole Nationale de Chauny is located in Chauny Communal Cemetery.
Historical Information
Built in 1919, La Nécropole Nationale de Chauny holds bodies that were exhumed from temporary military cemeteries in the Chauny, Coucy and Laon region. In 1953, the remains of soldiers who had died during the Second World War were buried there.
In this cemetery lie 468 French soldiers, including 139 in an ossuary for the period 1914-1918, and 18 killed in May-June 1940, including eight whose identities are unknown.
