The images and additional information are provided by Richard Harris (Great Grandson)
These are pictures of my great grandad, William Mason, who died aged 46 after volunteering as a miner. I believe he was paid an additional 1d per day as a volunteer. Attached are also letters and a card sent to my grandmother from the trenches the last letter being sent 8 days before he died. We believe he joined as a miner to tunnel under German trenches.
My dad Wilfred Harris, traced our mining family back to Charles 1st and dad was the last of a long line of miners. He retired aged 58 after 44 years at Easington Colliery where he started work aged 14 in 1939. Too young to serve but old enough to go down the pit.
My daughter is an English teacher but she showed a presentation to one of her year groups, telling them a bit of William’s history and about WWI. She used these items.
