7144396 Private James Joseph Daly, 1st Bn. Connaught Rangers, executed for mutiny 2nd November 1920. He took a leading part in the notorious mutiny in India by 1 Connaught Rangers, who were protesting about British counter-insurgency in Ireland (particularly the tactics & behaviour of the ‘Black & Tans’).The Mutiny took place at Jullundur & Solon cantonments, ending in the latter place when some mutineers were shot & others overpowered. 69 were in due course tried: of the 14 death sentences imposed, only Daly’s was confirmed. Daly was the last soldier in the British Army to be executed for a military offence. He was buried locally; his remains & those of 2 of his comrades killed during the mutiny were repatriated to Ireland in 1968. (Putkowski,p 270; Babington,pp.258-260).
