Location Information

The Ile d'Ouessant is an island off the west coast of Brittany, which can be reached by boat from Brest or Le Conquet. Lampaul is the main village with the churchyard in the centre.


History Information

There are 5, 1914-1918 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, 3 are unidentified.

Donald George MacPhail
Canadian Army Chaplains Department attached to 72 Bn. Canadian Infantry
27th June 1918, aged 55. 

Son of Donald and Christina MacPhail, of Perth, Ontario; husband of Louisa B. MacPhail, of 35, King St. West, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

His headstone bears the inscription "We Fall To Rise Are Baffled To Fight Better Sleep To Wake"



Burial Details

Captain Samuel John Green, S. S. Ashby, Mercantile Marine, died 15th February 1916, aged 45. Son of Samuel and Jane Green, Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees; husband of Emma Green, of Norwood, St. Dogmael's, Pembrokeshire.

Born at West Hartlepool, he was the son of Samuel and Jane Green of Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees.

He married Emma Nicholas in 1898, and for several years prior to WWI had resided with his wife at Norwood House, St. Dogmael's, Pembrokeshire.

Samuel served in the Merchant Navy aboard the SS Ashby. He died after the Ashby was wrecked near Ushant on 15 February 1916. His body was washed ashore in France, and buried at Lampaul Churchyard, Ile D'Ouessant, France.
