Bernafay Wood, 27th/28th August, 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and enterprise during the operations. Keeping close up with the barrage he reached the objective with his company, and, pressing on, he gave the enemy no time to reorganise. Later, when the troops on both flanks were driven back, he superintended the defence of the flanks under heavy fire and ultimately enabled the line to be re-established.

A labourer from Ironmongie via Cooma, NSW prior to enlistment, Pte Kelly embarked with the 7th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Ascanius on 25 October 1916. Later transferring to the 18th Battalion, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and awarded the Military Medal 'For gallantry and devotion to duty on 3rd October 1918 near Estrees north of St Quentin'. Following the Armistice, he developed Influenza and was admitted to No. 53 Casualty Clearing Station on 27th November 1918, later he developed bronchial pneumonia and on 10 December 1918, he succumbed to his illness.
