Ligny-en-Cambrésis Communal Cemetery

​Location Information

Ligny-en-Cambrésis is a village about 12 kilometres south-east of Cambrai and 4 kilometres south of Fontaine-le-Pire.

From Cambrai, take the N43 main road towards Le Cateau. After 11 kilometres, at Beauvois-en-Cambresis, turn right onto the D74 road towards Fontaine-au-Pire and Ligny. After about 4 kilometres turn left onto the D15 road towards Caudry. 500 metres further on turn right into the Communal Cemetery.

Historical Information

The Communal Cemetery was used by the Germans; but the German graves have now been removed.

Allied Section No. 9 was designed by William Harrison Cowlishaw

There are now 40, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, 21 are unidentified.

William Malcolm Chisholm
1st Bn. East Lancashire Regiment
27th August 1914, aged 22.
Allied British Section. 9.

Son of Dr. William and Emma Isabel Chisholm. Born in Sydney, Australia.

​His headstone bears the inscription;
"Elder Son Of Dr. & Mrs. William Chisholm Of Sydney, New South Wales."

An Australian, Lieutenant Malcolm Chisholm, who had a brilliant future, has died from wounds received while fighting against the Germans in Belgium. He was the elder son of Dr. William Chisholm, of Macquarie St., Sydney, and was 22 years old. He held a commission in' the East Lancashire Regiment. He was wounded in the stomach in the fighting at Mons in August 1914. Malcolm's mother is also buried in a separate grave in the cemetery. Emma Isabel Chisholm died in Sydney, Australia on 4th November 1928 at the age of 61. There is also another memorial to William in the main Commonwealth plot in the cemetery.

The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

INNS, WALTER EDWARD. Private. No 7794. 1st Battalion King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. Born Uxbridge. Son of William and Jessie Inns. Lived 35 Colne Road, Huddersfield. Employed by Messrs David Brown and Sons Limited, Park Works, Lockwood. Married in 1907 to Clara Senior, with two children. Was a Reservist and re-enlisted at the outbreak of the war. Killed in action, 26.8.1914 aged 28 years.

10516 Serjeant Richard John Carnell, 1st Bn. East Lancashire Regiment, died 15th January 1915, aged 23. Son of John and Sarah Maud Carnell, of 28, Stratford Rd., Kensington, London. His headstone bears the inscription "Not Gone from Memory, Not Gone From Love. Mother, Father & Syd"

10622 Private R. W. Haggett, 1st Bn. East Lancashire Regiment, died 15th January 1915, aged 22. Son of Mrs. E. Haggett, of 7, Ringcroft St., Holloway, London. his headstone bears the inscription "Gone But Not Forgotten"

5845 Private Robert William Iles 1st Bn. Somerset Light Infantry, died 26th August 1914.

60692 Corporal Oswald George Jacques, 27th Battery, 32nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, died 14th September 1914, aged 26. Son of Henry and Jane Jacques, of Michel, British Columbia, Canada. Born at Doncaster. 

377 Lance Corporal J. Jordan, 2nd Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers, died 29th August 1914.

7700 Corporal John Tasker, 1st Bn. Rifle Brigade, died 26th August 1914.

6733 Private Raymond Arthur Turner, 1st Bn. Hampshire Regiment, died 26th August 1914, aged 29. Son of Arthur Theresa Turner; husband of Rhoda Sabrina Turner, of Leavesden Green, Watford. His headstone bears the inscription "Gone But Not Forgotten"

340 Private Ezra Walker, 2nd Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers, died 26th August 1914.

70th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps and 5th Bn. Durham Light Infantry
25th March 1917, aged 20.
Allied British Section. 4.


Son of Florence Mary Harrison (formerly Vane-Tempest), of The Cottage, Norton-on-Tees, and the late Charles Henry Vane-Tempest.

He died a prisoner of war at Ligny of wounds sustained a few hours earlier in aerial combat over the German lines.


B/202320 Rifleman Frederic Abbott, 13th Bn. Rifle Brigade, died 9th February 1919, aged 36. Allied British Section 6.
Son of Alfred and Mary Jane Abbott, of 12, Berridge Rd., Sherwood Rise, Nottingham; husband of Florence Caroline Abbott, of 80, Portland Rd., Nottingham. He was found drown on 9th February 1919 in Belgium.

Second Lieutenant Fred Allinson, M. C. Royal Flying Corps, attached to 8th Bn. The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment, died 27th March 1917, aged 24. Allied British Section 3. 
Son of Thomas and Annie Allinson (stepmother), of 2, West View, Muston Rd., Filey, Yorks.

242585 Corporal Henry Chittenden, 1st/6th Bn. 
Royal Warwickshire Regiment, died 16th April 1917, aged 22. Allied British Section 5. Son of Mr. H. E. Chittenden, of 69, Newbury St., Wantage, Berks.

28454 Henry John Nunn, 1st Bn. 
Essex Regiment, died 9th October 1918. Allied British Section 2. 
Henry John Nunn was born in 1879 in Eastwood, Essex, England, United Kingdom. His occupation was Horseman, Contractor.

241588 Private Rupert Scorthorne, 2nd/5th Bn. 
Lincolnshire Regiment, died 17th April 1917, aged 24. Allied British Section 7. Husband of Mary Scorthorne, of 12, Leadwell Lane, Robin Hood, Wakefield, Yorks.
