15880 Rifleman
James Edward Kelly Ross (known as Edward)
10th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles
DOB: 12th June 1896, Portrush, Co Londonderry, Northern Ireland
Died: 7th June 1917 at the Battle of Messines, killed in action but body never found
Edward was the son of Hugh and Annie Ross and my grandfather’s brother. He was unmarried and died just 5 days before his 21st birthday. He lived at home with his parents in Belfast at 364 Donegall Road and later at 46 Lecale Street off the Donegall Road in Belfast. The 1911 Census has Edward working as an ‘Office Boy’.
Records show that a year after his suspected death, his mother Annie was awarded his pension of 6 shillings a week. Not much for a soldier who sacrificed his life for his country and for others.
His cousin Samuel ROSS also served with the Royal Irish Rifles in the 1st Battalion. Samuel died on the 31stJuly 1917 at the Battle of Passchendaele (3rd Battle of Yprés), probably at the Battle of Pilckem Ridge.
Both Samuel and Edward are commemorated together on Panel 40 of the Menin Gate Memorial.
Thank you for your service, Edward. You are not forgotten.

10418 Lance Corporal
Samuel Ross
1st Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles
DOB: 28th January 1891, Portrush, Co Londonderry, Northern Ireland
Died: 31st July 1917 at the Battle of Pilckem Ridge on the first day of the 3rd Battle of Yprés (Passchendaele) He was 26 years old.
Samuel enlisted in Coleraine in September 1914. He first served with the 16th Battalion of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps (Service number C/92) and appears to have enlisted with pals from the same streets in Portrush. He was one of thirteen men to join from the ‘Lad’s Brigade’ at their parish Church, Holy Trinity in Main Street, Portrush. He is wearing the KRRC cap badge in some photos.
It is unclear when or why he transferred to the Royal Irish Rifles but assumed he may have been injured and on return to fitness, he joined the RIR. He served in France with the KRRC but did not receive the 14-15 Star medal which has a cut off date of December 1915.
A local newspaper cutting in 1916 states ‘The first of the boys serving with the King’s Royal Rifles in France, to arrive home on short furlough. Rifleman Ross, who is a son of Mr and Mrs Samuel Ross, Bazaar Street, reached Portrush on Saturday evening last, his clothes and boots showing traces of French mud, as he had come direct from the trenches, he has had over three months experience. Before the war, he was well known in football circles frequently sporting the Bushmills and Portrush colours.’
He died on the 31st July 1917, possibly at the Battle of Pilckem Ridge, on the first day of the 3rd Battle of Yprés (Passchendaele). His body was missing. It had rained heavily that day and the battlefield was a quagmire of mud. Many soldiers’ bodies were never recovered.
Samuel was a son of Samuel and Mary Ann Margaret Ross, Bazaar Street, Portrush. He was one of 13 children of whom only 5 survived in to teenage years. Samuel was a twin to his sister Annie. His father Samuel was a well known fisherman from the town and he was involved in setting up and crewing the Portrush Life Boat along with another brother of Samuel, Hugh.
His cousin, Edward ROSS, served with the 10th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles and died on the 7th June 1917 at the Battle of Messines.
Both are commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial on Panel 40. Samuel is also listed on the Portrush War Memorial in the town centre.
Thank you for your service Samuel. You are not forgotten.
