A miner from Boulder, Western Australia, prior to enlistment in the 11th Battalion on 27 September 1914, he embarked from Fremantle on 22 February 1915 aboard HMAT Itonus for Gallipoli. Pte Byfield was killed in action near Pozieres, France, on 3 September 1916.
1117 Sergeant T. Davis later gave these details about finding the body of William Byfield;
"I saw Byfield lying dead and partly buried at Mouquet Farm in one of the German trenches. Only his head was visible. I satisfied myself that he was dead. The Germans recaptured the trench, and it was not until much later that it was taken again by the Canadians. I think it hardly likely that his body was ever recovered."

OFFICER PAYS TRIBUTE TO LATE SGT. CROCKETT
(Col.) Crockett, York, received the following letter from the officer commanding the 1st Company, l4th Battalion, Somewhere in France:
Dear Mrs. Crockett:- It is my very sad duty to have to write to you about your son, Sgt. Crockett of my Company. He was wounded in the front line trench, badly wounded in the right shoulder. Notwithstanding the great pain he was suffering he continued firingis left shoulder and by his example and encouragement was greatly responsible for the brushing off of an attack by the enemy. After things had quieted down your son was sent out of the dressing station and it was on the way out that he was hit by another shell and was killed.
Believe me, Mrs. Crockett, your son's death was one of the greatest losses my Company and the Battalion has had for a long time. At the time of his death his papers had gone for a Commission and he had been strongly recommended for his work in the trenches before the time he was hit. Your only consolation dear Madam is that he died a soldier's death fighting for his country. We buried your son in a shell hole and placed a cross over his grave.
If there is anything I can do for you please do not hesitate. May God comfort you in your trouble.
Very sincerely yours,
J. K. Carson, Major 0. C. 1 Coy.
14th Battalion.
