Location Information

St Avold Military Cemetery is on the road to Carling, adjoining the Communal Cemetery.


History Information

St Avold Military Cemetery was begun by the Germans and contains French, Russian and German graves in addition to the eight Commonwealth burials of the First World War.

Commonwealth Burial Details:

203445 Private Walter Chettle, 1st/4th Bn. Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), died 27th September 1918, aged 31.
Son of Walter and Maria Chettle. Born at Rushden, Northants. His headstone bears the inscription "Whom We Love We Never Lose"

74043 Private F. W. Frise, 2nd Bn. 
Devonshire Regiment, died 20th October 1918, aged 19. Son of Frederick William and Jessie Elizabeth Frise, of Dostabrook Cottages, Horrabridge, Devon.

48236 Rifleman J. Hopkinson, 2nd Bn. 
Rifle Brigade, died 3rd September 1918.

42883 Lance Corporal Harry Walter Lines, 2nd Bn. Middlesex Regiment, died 31st October 1918, aged 36. Son of Walter Lines, of 5, Mafeking Terrace, Borough Green, Kent, and the late Mary Lines; husband of H. Lines, of 11, Newmarket Rd., Burwell, Cambs.

35113 Private J. Mills, 13th Bn. 
Gloucestershire Regiment, died 26th November 1918.

30319 Private George Muir, 6th Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers, died 26th October 1918. 
Son of Hugh Muir, of 73, Raploch Rd, Larkhall, Lanarkshire.

89450 Private L. Saunders, 2nd Bn. 
Middlesex Regiment, died 22nd July 1918.

G/10766 Private John Smith, 2nd Bn. Middlesex Regiment, died 24th April 1918, aged 25. 
Son of Mrs. Lucy Smith, of 114, Leavesden Rd., Watford. His headstone bears the inscription "Rest In Peace"
