Location Information

Thionville (Diedenhofen) French National (Mixed) Cemetery is on the west side of the town, adjoining the communal cemetery. The three Commonwealth war graves are in the south-west corner.


Historical Information

The cemetery was made by the Germans as an extension of the garrison cemetery. It contains the graves of 160 French, I,553 Allied and 704 German soldiers, and an ossuary with 85 bodies; the majority of these soldiers died in hospital at Thionville.

Among the Allied graves are three Commonwealth burials of the First World War.



Burial Details

372422 Rifleman A. E. Heather, 8th Bn. London Regiment (Post Office Rifles), died 28th November 1918.

9668 Private Edward Maher, 2nd Bn. Connaught Rangers, died 10th December 1918, aged 27. Son of Patrick and Johanna Maher, of Church St., Templemore, Co. Tipperary.

9843 Private J. Stack, 2nd Bn. Royal Munster Fusiliers, died 15th December 1918.
