Location Information

Filain is a commune 17 kilometres south-west of Laon, and the churchyard is beside the church in the centre of the village. The three Commonwealth burials from the 1914-1918 war are located in the north-east corner of the churchyard.


Burial Details


8052 Private T. Brown, 1st Bn. Royal Scots Fusiliers, died 22nd September 1914.

10910 Private Herbert Henry Chitty, 4th Bn. Royal Fusiliers, died 22nd September 1914, aged 33.

7765 Private E. Tyas, 1st Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment, died 20th September 1914.

German Monument

Behind the church is this monument, erected by the Germans during the First World War, originally overlooked a temporary cemetery where the soldiers who fell on the Chemin des Dames not far from the Sainte-Berthe chapel, located no more than 800 m away. It was recently rediscovered under rubble. One can still read the dedication (in German) engraved there: "Friends and enemies united in death, they rest in the shielding bosom of the earth, until one day the master awakens you with his creative word: let it be ...
