Location Information

Franvillers is a village and district in the Department of the Somme, and stands on high ground above the River Ancre. It is 19 Kms from Amiens and 10 Kms from Albert on the D929 road.

The Communal Cemetery and Extension are south-east of the village on the C201 road.


Visiting Information

Wheelchair access to this cemetery is possible with some difficulty.


Historical Information

The COMMUNAL CEMETERY at Franvillers was used at intervals from May 1916 to May 1918. It contains eight Commonwealth burials of the First World War.

The adjoining EXTENSION was used from April to August 1918 by units and field ambulances engaged in the defence of Amiens. It contains 248 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and five German graves.  

Casualty Details: UK 113, Australia 134, New Zealand 1, Germany 5; Total Burials: 253

The extension was designed by W C Von Berg.

Born 1894 – Garra, NSW, Australia. he was he son of Henry Charles Piddington and Emma Packham Piddington. He died 4 July 1918, leading 40 men in a raid against enemy lines in the Sailly-le-Sec sector of the Western Front, during the Battle of Le Hamel. 
​
He was 6'2" tall, fair and handsome with bright blue eyes.

In the background is the cross bearing the name of 132260 Lance Corporal Joseph James Francis, 160th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers, who died on 20 July 1918, age 22; 4776 Private Keith William Evans, 56th Battalion, enlisted Balmain, NSW, killed in action 18 July 1918. This image is one of a set of photographs of the original graves of some members of the 27th Battalion. The Battalion funded the purchase of the camera through its adjutant Captain (Capt) Southon for 5541 Pte G R Barrington to photograph the graves. The camera and negatives were then acquired by Major John L Treloar on behalf of the Australian War Museum, reimbursing costs for the camera to Capt Southon.
