Apparently, on the night of 27th June 1916, he took part in a night time trench raid to cut the wire in front of the German trenches prior to a major attack on 1st July 1916 - no doubt the battle of the Somme. He was taken back to his own lines but died the following day at the Casualty Clearing Station. He was buried at Heilly Station Cemetery. His younger brother - my grandfather - survived the war without a scratch, though he did suffer the effects of gas. He always considered himself extremely lucky.
