Shot at Dawn

11528 Rifleman Frederick Harding, 1st Bn. King's Royal Rifle Corps, executed for desertion 29th June 1916, aged 21. Plot II. A. 6.
A Londoner who had volunteered soon after the outbreak of war, he deserted from a front line trench near Arras. At trial, Harding virtually admitted to having formerly lived as a tramp & beggar, who was prone to ‘moving on’.  His mode of life was confirmed by the Metropolitan Police, but medical examination after trial concluded that, though he was of a low standard of intelligence, Harding was not mentally ill.  His was the 100th execution of the war.  (Putkowski,p.88)

177753 Private, John Maurice Higgins, 1st Bn. Canadian Infantry, executed for desertion 7th December 1916, aged 24. Plot I. B. 2. Son of David and Emma Higgins, of 24, Gwynne Avenue, Toronto, Canada. Born at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. No detail is available of his desertion, but it is clear that his next-of-kin were informed that he had died of wounds.  (Putkowski, p.141)

457241 Private, Henry H. Kerr, 7th Bn. Canadian Infantry, executed for desertion, 21st November 1916. Plot III. A. 9.
He deserted after serving one year on the Western Front, including on the Somme.  (Putkowski, p.135)

12182 Private, Allan Murphy, 9th Bn. Cameronians, (Scottish Rifles) executed for desertion, 17th August 1916. Plot II. A. 9. He had been absent for 6 months.  (Putkowski,p. 101)
