His headstone bears the inscription; "Greater Love Hath No Man."
His hat (not in picture) bears the number of the 84th Infantry Regiment, the militia unit in which he was serving when he enlisted on 1 April 1915. Before enlistment he had been a clerk at the Commercial Bank in Kalgoorlie. He embarked from Fremantle on HMAT Ascanius on 29 June 1915 with D Company, with battalion number 2186. He was a sniper attached to the 7th Brigade, and was killed by shrapnel at an observation post on 8 April 1916, at the age of 20. He was one of the earliest Australian casualties in France.

A railway employee from Molesworth, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Cantwell embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses on 27 October 1915. Later transferring to the 58th Battalion and then to the 59th Battalion, he was reported as missing in action in France. A subsequent court of enquiry determined that he had been killed in action at Fromelles, aged 29, on 19 July 1916. Following the Armistice his burial place was discovered and his body was exhumed and re-interred in the Ration Farm Military Cemetery, La Chapelle-D'Armentieres, France.

1760A Private Edward Wylde Haverfield gave the following details of the last hours of Victor Gibson;
"When I was lying out wounded in No Man's Land on the 19th July at Fleurbaix, I saw casualty lying down near me wounded. We were then about 130 yards from all our lines.I heard him call out, "I have stopped a couple more," which meant that he was twice hit as he lay on the ground. It was quite a common occurrence that night as many a wounded man was killed. The last I heard or saw of him was that night. It became too dark to see. I managed to crawl back to the lines."
Edward "Ted" Haverfield survived the war and died aged 78 on 8th June 1976.

Portrait of (then) Warrant Officer Sergeant Henry John (Roy) Hall, 2nd Replacements 2nd Battalion, of Uranquinty, NSW, who enlisted on 22 June 1915. Prior to his enlistment he served with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF). He later served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 54th Battalion and was killed in action on 19th-20th July 1916 at Fleurbaix, aged 22 years.
