Group portrait of members of the 12th Battalion. Known to be in the photograph (position unknown) is 446 Private (Pte) William Albert Gillam, a member of D Company. A miner from Queenstown, Tasmania, prior to enlistment, Gillam embarked with the rank of Corporal from Hobart aboard HMAT Geelong (A2) on 20 October 1914. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 23 June 1915, aged 34.

A 23 year old public servant prior to being appointed a Second Lieutenant on 23 August 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Honorary Captain with G Company from Melbourne on 19 October 1914 aboard HMAT Benalla (A24). After a stopover in Albany, Western Australia, they arrived in Egypt on 2 December 1914. Following further training in Egypt, the battalion took part in the Gallipoli landings on 25 April 1915 as part of the second wave. Capt Hartland was taken ill at Gallipoli in May and after receiving medical treatment, returned to duty twelve days later. He was then killed in action by enemy shelling on 26 July 1915 and was buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. His brother, 1361 Private William Bullen Hartland was also killed in action at Gallipoli on 20 August 1915. In the background of the image is Capt William Frederick Hodgson, also of the 8th Battalion from Auburn, Victoria. He was a 43 year old warehouseman and commercial traveller serving in the 48th Infantry Militia when he was appointed a Captain in the AIF on 25 August 1914. He embarked for overseas with Capt Hartland and was wounded in action during the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Capt Hodgson died from his wounds aboard HMAT Seang Choon on 29 April and was buried at sea. He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave. This image is from the collection of brothers Lt Alan Crawford Couve and 2nd Lt Henry Thomas Ladson Couve from Dandenong, Victoria. They photographed members of their unit in Egypt prior to serving at Gallipoli where they both died.

Both embarked for overseas with G Company 8th Battalion from Melbourne on 19 October 1914 aboard HMAT Benalla (A24). After a stopover in Albany, Western Australia, they arrived in Egypt on 2 December 1914. Following further training in Egypt, the battalion took part in the Gallipoli landings on 25 April as part of the second wave. Pte Meade was a 21 year old shop assistant prior to enlisting on 18 August 1914. He was made a Lance Corporal at Gallipoli and employed as a military policeman. After taking ill in November, he was evacuated to Malta for two weeks for medical treatment before returning to Gallipoli. In March 1916 he proceeded to France where he served until his was taken ill in March 1917 and evacuated to England for medical treatment for three months. After returning to France, he was wounded in action on 16 April 1918 and evacuated to England before being returned to Australia. He arrived home on 26 November 1918 and was discharged medically unfit for further service. Pte Heather was a 20 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 7 September 1914. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 4 July 1915 and is buried in the Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. On 12 November 1915 he received a bullet wound to the head and subsequently died. He was buried the next day in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery and the service was conducted by Chaplain 4th Class Thomas Pearce Bennett.

Pte Howarth, a railway engineer from Marrickville, NSW, enlisted on 22 August 1914 and was killed in action at Gallipoli on 19 May 1915. His brother, Alfred (Alf) Howarth enlisted in the same unit three days before Henry. They trained together at Mena Camp in Egypt and sent similar postcards home to their friend Victor Sleep. Sergeant Alfred Howarth survived Gallipoli to be killed at Pozieres, France, on 22-25 July 1916 and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
