Location Information

Vermelles is a village 10 kilometres north-west of Lens. From Lens take the N43 towards Bethune to its junction with the D75 in Mazingarbe. At Mazingarbe, take the second turning on the right and Vermelles Communal Cemetery will be found 800 metres further along on the right hand side of the road.


Historical Information

There are now seven 1914-18 war casualties and  two 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in this site.

1309 Gunner H. Clarke, 7th London Bde., Royal Field Artillery, died 2nd March 1916, aged 21. Cousin of M. Clarke, of Lahore Cottage, Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.

153 Bombardier Reginald William Cook,  7th London Bde., Royal Field Artillery, died 2nd March 1916, aged 26. Son of William Edwin and Emily Elizabeth Cook, of 10, Sherborne Gardens, West Ealing, London, W.13. Born at Caversham, Oxon.

82733 Corporal George Gray, "A" 71st Bde., Royal Field Artillery, died 14th March 1916, aged 21. Son of Jane Gray, of 532, Fulham Rd., Fulham, London.

9560 Gunner Percy Robert Hollingdale, 71st Bde., Royal Field Artillery, 30th October 1915, aged 18. Son of Mrs. A. H. Hollingdale, of 9, St. Leonard St., Victoria, London.

685 Serjeant P. G. Raynor, 7th London Bde., Royal Field Artillery, died 2nd March 1916, aged 25. Son of the late Samuel Rayner and of Margaret Hays (formerly Rayner), of 64, Montague Rd., Hounslow.

35651 Gunner H. C. Ross, 115th Bty. 25th Bde., Royal Field Artillery, died 13th October 1915, aged 31. Son of the late Dr. W. Ross and Frances E. Ross, of Riverstown, Co. Sligo.

75107 Gunner W. Way, 115th Bty. 25th Bde., Royal Field Artillery, died 13th October 1915.
