Location Information
Calais Southern Cemetery is a civil cemetery lying on the south of the old main road to Dunkerque.
Follow the A16 autoroute from Calais to Dunkirk. Come off at Junction 48 in the direction of Marck and follow the road to the junction. Turn left into Calais at the junction and follow Avenue de Calais D940) for approximately 3 kilometres and then straight on to Avenue de st. Expuréry. The Communal Cemetery is on the left hand side of the road, 50 metres after the traffic lights. To find the Commonwealth War Graves, proceed along the main pathway to the rear left hand side of the Cemetery.

Historical Information
In April 1915, No 6 Base Supply Depot was started at Calais to help relieve the pressure on Boulogne and to provide a base nearer to the front than Le Havre or Rouen. The base remained open until the last Commonwealth forces left France in March 1921.
The 30th, 35th and 38th General Hospitals, No 9 British Red Cross Hospital and No 10 Canadian Stationary Hospital were also stationed in the town, providing about 2,500 beds. From May 1915 to March 1918, Commonwealth burials were made in Calais Southern Cemetery. Subsequent interments were made in the new military cemetery at Les Baraques.
The cemetery now contains a total of 943 Commonwealth burials from both wars.

A labourer from Little River, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Connop embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses on 27 October 1915. Later transferring to the 7th Battalion, he was promoted to Corporal and wounded in action. Following his recovery, he rejoined his unit and was promoted to Sergeant. Later wounded in action for the second time, he was evacuated to hospital where, on 11 October 1917, aged 22, he succumbed to his wounds and was buried in the Calais Southern Cemetery, France. His cousin, 3523 Lance Corporal John Edmond Connop died of wounds on 16 October 1917 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium.

They are identified as probably 2641 Private (Pte) Herbert Gilfoy (Kilfoy), 6th Reinforcements, 23rd Battalion, of Yarram Yarram, Vic (originally of Lincolnshire, England), and 5553 Pte John Ernest Mayall, 11th Reinforcements, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, of Geelong, Vic. Pte Gilfoy enlisted on 2 August 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses on 27 October 1915. He was transferred to the 58th Battalion on 23 February 1916 and on 21 July 1916 he was admitted to the 30th General Hospital in France suffering a gun shot wound to the head. He died on 26 July 1916. Pte Mayall enlisted on 9 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Nestor on 11 October 1915. On 9 May 1916 he was transferred to the Divisional Ammunition Column and then on 11 August 1917 he transferred to the Australian Flying Corps. He returned to Australia on 3 July 1919.

A farmer from Athelstone, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 11 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas for Suez. Due to illness in Egypt he relocated to England before joining his battalion at Strazeele, France, on the Western Front in mid-October 1916. Pte Voce was wounded in action near Saint Sulpice, France, on 6 November 1916. He was initially evacuated to 18th General Hospital, Camiers, and then to 35th General Hospital, Calais, where he died of these wounds on 28 November 1916. Pte Voce is buried in the Calais Southern Cemetery. He was aged 18 years.
