Gomiécourt South Cemetery

Location Information

Gomiécourt is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, 16 kilometres south of Arras and 6 kilometres north-west of Bapaume. Gomiécourt South Cemetery is on the south-east side of the village.


Historical Information

Gomiécourt village was captured by the 3rd Division on 23 August 1918 and the cemetery was made by the 62nd Division Burial Officer at the end of August 1918

Gomiécourt South Cemetery contains 206 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, ten of which are unidentified. 27 German burials form a separate plot on the south-west side.

Total Burials: 233.

Identified Casualties: United Kingdom 195, Germany 21. Total 216.

Unidentified Casualties: United Kingdom 11, Germany 6. Total 17.

His headstone bears the inscription "Missed Most By Those Who Loved Him Best."

Son of the late Thomas Edward and Elizabeth Mockridge, of Shortlands; husband of Grace Kezia Mockridge, of 7, Waldo Rd., Bromley, Kent.

His headstone bears the inscription "His Heart Was Good His Spirit Brave Her Is Resting In A Hero's Grave"

Robert joined the Royal Field Artillery in December 1914 and after training went to France in July 1915. He took part in fierce fighting during his three years in France and Flanders, having been at Ypres, Amiens and Cambrai. He had been home on leave in May 1916, again in October 1917 and was expected home again but was struck on the head by a piece of shell and killed instantly.
