Location Information
Corbie is a village 15 kilometres south-west of Albert and approximately 23 kilometres due east of Amiens. La Neuville British Cemetery is west of the village on the south side of the road from La Neuville to Daours.
Visiting Information
For your information, vehicular access to this Cemetery is via a rough track with limited parking and turning space, thereafter it is a walk of 300m to the Cemetery entrance. The track is regularly used by large agricultural machinery and lorries.
Historical Information
In April 1916, No.21 Casualty Clearing Station came to La Neuville and remained there throughout the 1916 Battles of the Somme, until March 1917. La Neuville British Cemetery was opened early in July 1916. Most of the burials date from this period, but a few graves were added during the fighting on the Somme in 1918.
Neuville British Cemetery contains 896 burials of the First World War.

On 5 April 1918, near Corbie, France, he was wounded in action and died later that day, aged 24 years. He was awarded the Military Medal for his heroic rescue of two men despite artillery and machine-gun fire in the area of Guedecourt, France on night of 22 - 23 November 1916. Previously, he had exhibited bravery by bringing in men from "No Man's Land" after the action at Fromelles, France in July 1916. The award was gazetted on 12 March 1917.

Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Longueville, France, on 6 March 1917. Pte Edwards was wounded in action near Corbie, France, on 27 April 1918 and was evacuated to the 8th Australian Field Ambulance where he died of these wounds later that day. He was aged 23 years.

The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France during June 1916. Pte McArthur was hospitalised for three weeks in late January 1917 due to an accidental injury while acting as the Company cook. He attended the Anzac Cookery School in late September that year. Pte McArthur was wounded in action near Vaux-sur-Somme on 28 May 1918 and died of these wounds later that day at 8th Australian Field Ambulance. He was aged 30 years.

437 Sapper, James Grant gave the following details of Charlie Poulton's death;
"Between 9 and 9.30 on the evening of May 30th, we were at La Neuville, near Corbie, and Poulton was in a dug-out. A High Explosive shell fell there and Poulton was badly injured, his right arm being severed. He lived 10 minutes. I was 10-15 yards away and heard the shell. I saw him after he was hit and helped carry him to the Dressing Station."
Charlie Poulton spent most of his time in the front line with the rest of his company, however, due to his small stature he had been sent out of the line and was working as a cook at the time he was killed.
