Cuesmes Communal Cemetery
Location Information

Cuesmes Communal Cemetery is located 2 km west of Mons.

From the R50 Mons ring road the N6 leads southwards towards Maubeuge. 700 metres along the N6 Avenue General De Gaulle lies the right hand turning onto the N544 chaussee de Cuesmes. 2 km along the N544 lies the village of Cuesmes.

On reaching the village the cemetery is located 300 metres beyond the village square on the right hand side of the rue de Frameries.


Visiting Information

Visitors should note that this site is restricted to normal cemetery opening hours.

Wheelchair access possible via main entrance.


Historical Information

Cuesmes Communal Cemetery contains 47 Commonwealth burials of the First Wordl War, 38 of which are unidentified. They date from August 1914 and October-December 1918, and in most cases they were brought into the cemetery after the Armistice.

Total Burials: 47.

Identified Casualties: United Kingdom 6, Canada 3. Total 9.

Unidentified Casualties: 38.

27303 Lance Corporal Delbert Bean, M. M. 1st Canadian Division, Cyclist Company, died 9th November 1918, aged 21.Son of Eugene and Nina Bean, of North Hatley, P.Q., Canada; husband of Ethel Bean (Nee Smith), of 808, East 14th St., Chester, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

7399 Private J. Burns, 2nd Bn. South Lancashire Regiment, died 26th August 1914.

A/10970 Corporal Percy Wainwright Carleton, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment), died 10th November 1918, aged 26. Son of William Carleton, M.D., and Charlotte M. Carleton, of 377, Mance St., Montreal, Canada. Native of Ireland.

8543 Corporal J. Hayes, 2nd Bn. South Lancashire Regiment, died 24th August 1914.


9939 Private William Percy Holliday, 2nd Bn. South Lancashire Regiment, died 24th August 1914.

10009 Lance Corporal Ernest Holt, 2nd Bn. South Lancashire Regiment, died 28th August 1914, aged 26. Son of the late Tom and Margaret Amanda Holt.

10157 Private James Price, 2nd Bn. South Lancashire Regiment, died 24th August 1914, aged 16. Son of William and Elinor Price, of 60, Glyn Gwyn St., Miskin, Mountain Ash, Glam.

2182 Sergeant P. Quinn, D. C. M. Canadian Division, Cyclist Company, died 9th November 1918.

8341 Private Peter Henry Smith, 2nd Bn. South Lancashire Regiment, died 24th August 1914, aged 25.
