Harold was the youngest son of William Boyes and Sarah Black of Ballycastle, Co. Antrim. Harold emigrated to Canada in 1910 to join his other five brothers. He enlisted in 1915 and shipped to France in the same year. His brother Gordon, a Captain with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force, was at his side when he died. He subsequently wrote to relatives in Ballycastle this short remembrance of Harold’s passing-
"Ah, it breaks my heart to have to write on a subject like this. We little thought in the days of long ago he would be the first to be taken. His loss is just as fresh in my mind as ever- it is a picture I cannot erase, go where I will, do what I may. Still we must not forget the manner of his living, or the splendid example he showed in dying with such calm content in the knowledge of duty well and nobly done."

Harry was sent to convalesce in Kent & married a local woman later in 1915, had children & stayed in Chatham the rest of his life passing away 1974.
William was the last to die. At this time (autumn 1914) he was a gardener at Peterborough park, but ended up enlisting in December 1915 under the Derby Scheme. He married June 1916 before arriving in France July of that year. 1st or 2nd May 1918 he was gassed in Gorre & died of wounds 8th May 1918.

Bennie was the son of John Paul Dowling and Elizabeth Dowling (nee Newman) of 29, Glebe Road, Middlesbrough and was a native of Middlesbrough. He was posted to France in November of 1915 and served there, eventually with the 51st Highland division until his death. He was in the trenches close to Beaumont Hamel during the first push for High Wood when he sustained a serious wound to the head on the 27th October 1916, was taken to 26 General Hospital in Etaples and died there shortly after.
