20th July 1917, aged 33.
Plot II. G. 21.
Son of Higginson Fayle Grant and Lucy Jane Grant, of Chew Stoke, Somerset.
His headstone bears the inscription "Rest After Toyle Port After Stormy Seas Death After Life Doth Greatly Please"
The information below supplied by 'The Ellesmerian Club', the alumni organisation for Ellesmere College where Disney was a pupil.
Disney Fayle Grant, the youngest son and one of six children of Higginson Fayle , a retired bank manager and his wife, Lucy Jane, was born at Newport, Isle of Wight on 30th September 1883. Little is known of his childhood but by the time he was eight years old the family had moved to take up residence at ‘The Firs’ in Llanhenog, Caerleon, Monmouthshire. Here Disney attended Llanhennock School, in the centre of the village, for the three years prior to his admittance to the ‘Alfred’ dormitory at Ellesmere College on 25th January 1894 when just ten years old.
Thirty-one new boys arrived in north Shropshire that term and, when the call to arms came, many of them served in uniform. Disney, who boarded for five terms and left at the end of the summer term 1895, was the only entrant that January to die on active service during the conflict.
Bearing in mind his young age it is not surprising that there are almost no mentions of Disney during his time at the college other than the fact that he was placed in Form Lower I (B) under the instruction of Mr. F. M. Bassano, himself an Old Ellesmerian from 1888. There were one hundred and fifty-nine on the nominal roll.
Disney left Ellesmere just before his twelfth birthday but it is not known where he went on to continue his education. By the time of the 1901 Census the peripatetic lifestyle of a bank manager had led to the family relocating to Stanton Wick, Somerset and seventeen-year old Disney was recorded as living at home whilst employed as a bank clerk.
Ten years later, when Disney was 27 years old and single, the family were back on the Isle of Wight. He was still a bank clerk, presumably in Newport.
Disney’s military service records have not survived and very few other records refer to him. From his Medal Card and these other sources it can be seen that he was Bombardier Grant, Service No. 825052 (later changed to 699) with ‘A’ Battery, 240 Brigade, Royal Field Artillery and that he embarked for overseas service on 30th March 1915 with the 4th (South Midland) Division. This would indicate he enlisted soon after the outbreak of war.
On arrival in France, the Division concentrated on the area around Cassell and, in 1916 it took part in The Battle of the Somme, suffering just under 5,000 casualties on the 1st July when attacking the Quadrilateral (Heidenkopf). That year the Division also saw action at Bazentin Ridge, Pozieres Ridge, Ancre Heights and Ancre. The following year the Division occupied Peronne during the the German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line and were in action in the Third Battles of Ypres where Disney was probably killed on 20th July.
The exact circumstances surrounding his death are not recorded but he was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. He was buried in Poperinghe New Military Cemetery.
