He was commissioned as an officer from the rank of sergeant in October 1916, and the same month was awarded the Military Medal for his conduct at Gallipoli and in France. On 26 March 1917 he was wounded by an enemy shell near Lagnicourt and was taken to a nearby dressing station, where he died of his wounds.

"This man was killed by a high explosives at the Sunken Road, near Lagnicourt on March 27th, 1917. No attack was being made but the shell landed in the support trench, and exploded and Keetley was killed instantly, the head being badly injured. I was an eye-witness of this casualty."
Born in 1869, Harry Keetley was originally from New Zealand and had already fought with the N.Z. forces in the Boer War. He attempted to re-enlist four times in New Zealand in 1916, but was refused due to his age (46). He then travelled to Australia where he was allowed to enlist in the 19th Battalion after giving his age as 43. he was killed at Lagnicourt the following year, aged 47.

"He was buried in the old front line on the Somme (actually Pas de Calais) with two others and in the railway cutting. He was practically blown to pieces. I helped to bury him. Col. Leane (brother) recognised him from his head."

After further training in Egypt and England he arrived in France on 17 November 1916 and reverted to the rank of Private. He was appointed Lance Corporal in January 1917 and promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 22 March 1917. Cpl Martin was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, on 3 May 1917, aged 29. Martin wears a uniform with Sergeant's stripes. This may indicate a temporary rank not recorded in his service record.

"Was in "D" Coy, was wounded during the stunt on May 3rd. I saw him lying badly wounded just near Fritz's barbed wire. He was in 3rd wave and we advanced beyond where he was hit. The stretcher bearers were coming up just behind him and I'm almost certain he was brought in. We did not retire. It happened at Bullecourt."
