Pre-enlistment outdoor studio portrait of brothers 6112 Private (Pte) David Frederick Mansfield, 17th Battalion, and 5056 Pte William Joseph Mansfield (enlisted under the alias William Jones), 18th Battalion, of Maclean, Clarence River, NSW. While the photograph is known to depict both brothers, their position is unknown. A fisherman before enlisting in May 1916, David Mansfield left Australia for England with the 17th Reinforcements in October 1916 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in July 1917. Pte David Mansfield died of wounds received in action at Broodseinde Ridge, Belgium, on 10 October 1917, aged 22. Pte William Mansfield was a labourer before enlisting in January 1916 and left Australia with the 13th Reinforcements in June 1916 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in November 1916. He was killed during the 18th Battalion's attack on Malt Trench at the Butte de Warlencourt, France, on 25 February 1917, aged 19 and is buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery.
