Location Information

Wanquetin is a village approximately 12 kilometres west of Arras and approximately 6 kilometres north of Beaumetz. Wanquetin Communal Cemetery lies to the north-east of the village on the road to Warlus (D.59)


Historical Information

A few burials were made in the communal cemetery from March to November 1916, but in October 1916, the 41st Casualty Clearing Station came to the village, and by the end of November it had become necessary to begin the extension.  

The communal cemetery contains eight Commonwealth burials of the First World War, the extension 222. The extension also contains nine Second World War burials from May 1940.

The extension was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield

38728 Private W. K. Bailey, 15th Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment, died 26th Nov. 1916.

40829 Private A. E. Baker, 9th Bn., Essex Regiment, died 28th November 1916.

97988 Gunner A. E. Baker, B Battery, 48th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, died 22nd March 1916.

4968 Lance Corporal H. Barton, 
18th Bn. attd. 106th Trench Mortar Bty., Highland Light Infantry, died 28th November 1916.

121660 Sapper R. George, 184th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers, died 6th March 1916.

16032 Corporal William Hutchings, A Company, 5th Bn., Royal Berkshire Regiment, died 28th November 1916, aged 27. Son of George and Mary Hutchings of Reading, Berkshire.

422 Serjeant James William Napier, 19th Bn., Durham Light Infantry, died 28th November 1916, aged 23. Son of James William Napier of 60 Dean Road, South Shields.

28425 Private Willie Prentice,
West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), died 23rd november 1916, aged 21.  Son of Joseph and Ann Elizabeth Prentice of 82 Clipstone Street, West Bowling, Bradford, Yorks.
