Son of John and Clara Jane Butler, of Mortimer Terrace, Ombersley. 202685 Serjeant J Butler was in 1/8th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment. He seems to have fought in France twice during WW1 and rose from private to Serjeant during that time. Both his parent's obituaries mention him being gassed during the war, and it is possible that this was the reason for him being invalided out the first time, and TB was the reason for the second. He caught TB in the trenches during WW1 and subsequently died on 30 Sept. 1920. Single. Buried 4 Oct. 1920 in St. Andrews Church, Ombersley. Living in Oldfield, Ombersley prior to death, and J. Webster took the funeral. John requested that it was not a military funeral, and a lone bugler played the last post at his grave. His sister, Jane, nursed John, but sadly caught his TB and died from it herself when pregnant later in 1920. Her father's obituary confirmed death from consumption. J Webster officiated at her funeral and Jane was recorded as 25 years old on December 4th.
